Two-time defending team champion United States on course for more gold medals

Team USA's Patrick Allen, Chris Barnes, Wes Malott, Bill O'Neill and Tommy Jones (pictured left) took the lead in the prestigious 5-player team event at the Men's World Championships in Germany in the first of two qualifying squads Thursday at Dream-Bowl Palace in Unterföhring near Munich.
The Americans, who have won the gold medals in Singles and Trios, had games of 1142, 1122 and 1050 on the 38-foot WTBA Atlanta oil pattern to lead a field of 29 countries with 3314 pinfall total and an average of 220.93. Places 2-4 belonged to European teams.
Two-time defending champion, United States holds a 29 pin lead over Finland's Mika Koivuniemi, Joonas Jähi, Petteri Salonen, Pasi Uotila and Osku Palermaa (pictured right, l-r) , who used games of 1136, 1063 and 1086 to take the second place with 3285 (219.00). Two-hander Palermaa had the highest individual 3-game series of 725.
There was a bigger gap between second and third place as Norway featuring Svein Roger Olsen, Martin Olsen, Bjørn Einar Rudshagen, Mads Sandbækken and Tore Torgersen was 98 pins behind Finland with 3187 (212.47).

Mats Maggi, Steve Peetroons, Olivier Leroy, Jean-Marc Samain and Gery Verbruggen, Belgium, were another 99 pins behind Norway in fourth place with 3088 (205.87).
Canada with Jean-Sebastien Lessard, Michael Schmidt, Guillaume Nadeau, Jason Kovack and Mark Buffa (pictured left, l-r) missed a top-4 spot by 17 pins to finish Squad 1 in 5th place with 3071, followed by the host country, Germany, with Pascal Winternheimer, Bodo Konieczny, Marco Baade, Achim Grabowski and Jens Nickel (pictured right, l-r, with Michael Holzapfel on the far left) with 3039. Hong Kong with Michael Mak, Cyrus Cheung, Michael Tsang, Eric Tseng and Wu Siu Hong was mere one pin behind the Germans in 7th place with 3038.
The teams from 54 countries were split into two squads who will bowl two 3-game blocks, one each on the 38-foot WTBA Atlanta (Thursday) and 45-foot WTBA Mexico City (Friday) lane conditioning pattern.
The top four teams after 6 games will advance to the playoffs starting on Friday evening at 7.30 p.m. CET (1.30 p.m. EST).

The 2010 WTBA World Men's Championships will run through Aug. 21st. Players will compete for medals in six events - Singles, Doubles, Trios, five-player Team, All Events and Masters match play.
