Venezuelan men claim gold in prestigious Team event at Centroamericanos

Jose Estrada survives strong charge by Andres Gomez to win in All Events

2010CACGVENMen.jpgReydnier Chavez, Jose Lander, Rafael Medina, Luis Olivo and Ildemaro Ruiz (pictured left) joined forces to claim the prestigious Team title in the 21st Central American and Caribbean Games Saturday at Bolera Caribe in Ponce, Puerto Rico.

The fivesome finished with the most consistent games of 1090, 1093 and 1088 to earn the gold medal with 6510 six-game total and an average of 217. Ruiz led the team with 1359, Chavez was close behind with 1344, Lander had 1293, Medina added 1280 and Singles champion Olivo contributed 1141.

Colombia with Fabio Garcia, Andres Gomez, Jaime Monroy, Manuel Otalora, Juan Rodriguez and David Romero finished their six-game series with a huge 1133 game to overtake Puerto Rico en route to earn the silver medal with 6365 (212.37).

Puerto Ricans Francisco Colon, Bruno Díaz, Israel Hernández, Luis Rodríguez, Gabriel Sanchez and Andraunick Simounet finished three pins behind the Colombians to take the bronze medal with 6362 (212.07).

There was a bigger gap between third and fourth place. Alvaro Castro, Alberto Lizano, Marvin Murillo, Alejandro Reyna and Federico Reyna were 140 pins off the pace for the bronze medal with 6222 (207.40). Reyna led the team with 1383.

Guatemala's Miguel Aguilar, Rene Batres, Armando Batres, Antonio De Leon and Luis Herrera finished the team event with a bang by rolling a 1266 game (253.6 average). De Leon posted the first 300 game of the Games, Rene Batres had a 290, Armando Batres was next with 267, Aguilar had 234 and Herrera 175.

2010CACGAndresGomez.jpgThe 1266 helped Guatemala to the highest 3-game block of 3344 and the team ended up tied with the Dominican Republic at 6216 (207.20) to share the fifth place. De Leon had the high game and 3-game high of 741.

2010CACGJoseEstrada.jpgDue to his 1432 series, Andres Gomez (pictured right), Colombia, made a late charge for the gold medal in All Events. The PBA exempt player, who was in sixth place after four disciplines (Singles, Doubles, Mixed Doubles and Trios), leaped four spots but fell 10 pins short of the gold to earn silver with 6500 and an average of 216-67 for 30 games.

Jose Estrada (left), Dominican Republic, who previously had the highest six-game series maintained a 10-pin lead to capture his second title after the victory in Doubles with 6510 (217.00). Estrada had 1234 in Singles, 1430 in Doubles, 1283 in Mixed Doubles, 1321 in Trios and 1242 in the Team event.

2010CACGAlejamdroReyna.jpgAlejandro Reyna (right), Costa Rica, used the second-best series in the Team event (1383) to overtake Manuel Otalora, Colombia (4th, 6477), Israel Hernández, Puerto Rico (5th, 6407) and Luis Olivo, Venezuela (6th, 6343), en route to secure the bronze medal with 6497 (215.90).

The top 16 players from the All Events standings advanced to the Masters match play in best-of-three games bracket system. Armando Batres, Guatemala, took the 16th and final spot to advance with 6196 or an average of 206.53. His compatriot Antonio De Leon missed the top 16 by 121 pins to finish in 26th place.

2010CACGLogo.jpg The 21st Central American and Caribbean Games (XXI Juegos Deportivos Centroamericanos y del Caribe) will take place in the city of Mayagüez and in other cities of the Porta del Sol region in the west of Puerto Rico. The Bowling competition will be held at Bolera Caribe in Ponce from July 19-25, 2010.

74 men from 14 member federations of CONCECABOL (Confederacion Centroamericana y del Caribe de Bowling - Central and Caribbean Bowling Confederation) - Bahamas (6), Bermuda (6), Colombia (6), Costa Rica (6), Dominican Republic (6), Guatemala (6), Mexico (6), Panama (6), Puerto Rico (6), Venezuela (6), El Salvador (5), Honduras (4), Netherlands Antilles (3), Virgin Islands (2) - will compete for gold, silver and bronze medals in Singles Doubles, Mixed Doubles, Trios, 5-Player Teams, All Events and Masters.
