Team All-Events champions won't repeat at USBC Open Championships
07/02/09
Michael Nape of Yorkville, Ill., has enjoyed a successful career at the United States Bowling Congress Open Championships, and in 2008, he finally got the one thing that eluded him for 20 years- a title on the tournament lanes.
The 40-year-old right-hander helped Fox Bowl 2 of Wheaton, Ill., to the Team All-Events crown last year in Albuquerque, N.M., and this week, the group took to the lanes at Cashman Center to put that title on the line.

After a 3,130 start in team Tuesday, Nape and his teammates needed to post some big numbers in Doubles and Singles Wednesday if they were going to catch Linds Limited of Milwaukee, which leads Team All-Events this year with 10,372, the third highest total in tournament history. Linds Limited also leads Regular Team with 3,449.
"We knew what to expect, but we had many factors going against us," said Nape, who made his 22nd USBC Open Championships appearance. "We didn't get a good pair, and it was hard to carry out there. If I had to do it over again, I would move to the late team squad."
Despite the team's efforts, there will not be a second consecutive win for Fox Bowl 2. The group finished with a 9,384 total this year, 400 pins shy of the top 10. The last team to win back-to-back Team All-Events titles was Lodge Lanes of Belleville, Mich., in 1997 and 1998.
Peter Spreadbury led the way for Fox Bowl 2 this week with a 2,010 all-events total and was followed by Michael Nape (1,910), 2001 Regular Doubles champion Gregg Zicha (1,910), Anthony Jordan (1,819) and Walter Schaub (1,735).
Although they were unable to repeat, the teammates enjoyed their time in spotlight during the past year, and their time at Cashman Center was the final touch.
"The past year, we've been excited and have been on a high," said Nape, who manages and bowls at Fox Bowl. "It was nice to see the eagles on the scoreboard, and everyone enjoyed it. We were nervous coming out after the beautiful presentation. It took me a couple of shots in team to finally settle down."
Nape started his Open Championships career in 1988 with a group of bowlers who had already found success on the tournament lanes, and that made him appreciate what the Open Championships was all about.
"I first started out with a group of guys who had a lot of success," Nape said. "I learned about the prestige of this tournament, and I learned to respect it. It hit me when we were being announced that I finally got an eagle. It was 20 years in the making, and to finally do it was indescribable."
Nape entered this year's tournament as the lifetime average leader (minimum 20 years) with a 216.3 average for 189 games, an accomplishment he is very proud of, but his performance this year wasn't enough to hold on to the top spot. Gail Myers Jr. of Monroe, Wis., turned in a 2,111 all-events total to jump to the top of the list (216.61), but that doesn't include any bowlers who reach the required 20 years of participation in 2009.
"It's disappointing not being the average leader anymore," said Nape, whose career mark is now 216.09. "You can't understand how hard it is to top that list with all of those years and all of the people who bowl this event. I congratulate Gail on a great year."
Overall, Nape and his teammates had a great time enjoying their championship for a year, but now they are ready and determined to rebound and make their way back to the top at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, Nev., in 2010.
"We are grateful to the USBC for the great presentation and for treating us like champions," Nape said. "We look forward to next year and competing like champions again."
